Africawoman was set up in 2001 by Worldwoman - a Scottish based
charity that trains and publishes women journalists from developing
countries. Worldwoman is backed by the British Council, Department for
International Development, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy
and the Six Continents Leisure Group.
Africawoman connects 80 female journalists from Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe,
Uganda, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Nigeria. who meet in a monthly
virtual newsroom (VNR). Their monthly newspapers are the products of
pioneering virtual meetings across the African continent and across
the Equator!
The VNR is an intranet that allows all the women involved to gather
in intranet cafes across Africa and connect up with one another and
founder, the BBC journalist Lesley Riddoch in Scotland. Africawoman
is setup as an NGO and has an African editor, Lucy Oriang of
the Nation newspaper, and co-ordinator, Florence Machio both
based in Nairobi.
Africawoman's aim is to encourage African women to develop a new voice
in journalism - to develop their personal confidence as opinion formers
- to make sure women hit the headlines on issues side-lined by politicians
and to learn skills to develop supplements for African newspapers, create
a wires and news service for African community radio stations, present
documentaries for UK TV and radio, and ultimately move as trainers to
other parts of the world to help start the virtual newsroom process
all over again!
It's ambitious - and Africawoman needs help to raise more cash to develop
the project. So read on and if you can help raise funds contact Lesley
Riddoch at lesley.riddoch@bbc.co.uk
or Florence Machio at Africawoman@swiftkenya.com
- and email Lucy Oriang at loriang@nation.co.ke
